Q&A with Portia Albrecht, Founder & Owner of Generate
December 4, 2017
Today on the blog, we’re sitting down with the one and only Portia Albrecht, founder and owner of Toronto’s most eco-friendly gym. Creative, passionate and hard-working, Portia is an inspiration to us all. Read about her fitness obsessions, favourite healthy meals and tips for entrepreneurs below:
Why did you first start Generate?
I moved to Toronto and I couldn’t find a studio that had all of the things I wanted: a variety of classes and a gym space with lots of natural light, a friendly vibe and a non-toxic environment.
I also used to be a nurse and I wanted people to be healthy and avoid going to the hospital rather than be working in the hospital. I wanted to help people prevent illness through lifestyle changes.
What advice would you give to those looking to improve their life through fitness?
I would say just move more, and move in a wide variety of ways. Don’t just go running every day, but go to the park, go on the swings, run upstairs. Just move your body in different ways and as often as possible. And eat your vegetables!
What advice would you give to someone looking to make it in the fitness industry?
I think many instructors have the idea that they want to open their own studio. It’s really important that you love what you do, but business is an entirely different skill set, so it’s equally important to gain those skills yourself or have trusted advisors who can help you. It’s not that easy to open your own place so write a detailed business plan because a lot of deficiencies and details come to light when you do that.
What kind of movement are you loving right now?
Ballet! It’s the most challenging and enjoyable workout I’ve ever done. Circus/aerial arts are really fun too. (Cirque du Soleil kind of stuff).
What’s your favourite healthy meal?
Salad! Any kind of salad. The one I’m currently loving is a variation on my mom’s red pepper salad, which is butter lettuce, roasted pepper, avocado, feta cheese, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes and salmon with lemon juice and olive oil dressing.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
It’s so rewarding when people tell me that Generate has made a positive difference in their lives and that they look forward to coming here.
What’s one fitness trend you wish would just go away?
One thing? You’re limiting me! Extremism, I would say. Extremism physically and with dieting and in all ways. Just be gentle with yourself. Don’t push yourself to the point of injury. It’s not a competition. If you’re an athlete, that’s one thing, but if you’re a regular human and you’re just trying to be healthy and well then there’s no reason to push yourself so hard.
What’s your dream healthy vacation?
I’m really looking forward to the Xinalani yoga retreat in Mexico at the end of January with Monica Bright of Enhanced Body.
If you could make everyone in the world take one eco-friendly action right now, what would it be?
Stop using plastic water bottles!
What’s next for you?
Lots of exciting things on the horizon. All top secret right now!
